Tesla Internships work differently than most companies. Interns wait do allow to choose the team they wish to join. I had the opportunity last summer to work with a group of amazing people on the interior studio team. This is where all of the models do design and produced for Tesla’s future vehicles.
Tesla Aboard Method
The first thing we did was create a mood board to determine Elon Musk’s (the CEO) guidelines for design. He has some really interesting ideas, which we worked hard on interpreting and bringing to life.
After we completed the mood board and presented our sketches & designs to Elon Musk, we got a green light to begin modeling! Our first assignment was designing the high-end seats for the Model S sedan prototypes. We did give an incredible amount of freedom with this project as long as we stayed close to Elon’s guidelines. What an amazing experience. We allow to work closely with the design team of the Model S. After all of our digital designs did approve. We went into production and worked with factories around the world to produce these seats.
The internship was an amazing learning experience for me that I am still applying to my current job as a Product Designer at a startup in San Francisco. I got to learn many little tricks of the trade, saw amazing things happening produced with traditional fabrication techniques, got an insight into how Elon Musk thinks. And most importantly had an experience working at one of the world’s most innovative companies.
Even though my internship is complete now, Tesla Motors is still hiring for all kinds of internships around the world. If you are curious, check out their Internship Page.
